Hi Paul. The dose rate for Ausmectin Sheep Drench is calculated for Ivermectin to be effective in sheep to control susceptible internal parasites. Internal parasites may develop resistance to anthelmintics. If you are seeing signs of resistance we would strongly suggest speaking with your local veterinary practitioner or animal health adviser for recommended management practices for your area to reduce the development of resistance. We recommend a drench resistance test be conducted prior to the purchase of any drench.

  5. Q How often should Ausmectin Sheep Drench be used? Is it suitable for a small hobby farm flock?

For best results in treating parasites and protecting against potential resistance, sheep should be drenched between once and twice a year, depending on whether they are breeding. Based on the Australian climate, the first drench should be conducted in the summer, usually around November or December. Constantly monitor sheep regularly for parasites. Keeping an eye out for telltale signs of parasites will ensure you are prepared to employ a drenching strategy as needed at any point. Symptoms include weight loss, diarrhoea, and rough wool. Faecal egg counts are also helpful for identifying sheep that are shedding a high number of parasitic eggs and can help you determine when a drench is needed. Ausmectin Sheep Drench is suitable for use by either the hobby farmer or large-scale sheep production. Answered by the admin

The use of Ivermectin in lactating ewes where milk or milk products may be used for human consumption is not recommended. This is because Ivermectin can be excreted in milk, and its residues can persist in milk for a prolonged period. Consumption of milk or milk products from animals treated with Ivermectin can lead to adverse effects in humans, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. In severe cases, it can also cause anaphylactic shock. Therefore, to avoid any potential risks to human health, it is recommended to withhold milk or milk products from lactating ewes treated with Ivermectin. The milk Withholding Period (WHP) for Ausmectin Sheep Drench advises 'not to use the product on lactating ewes or within 28 days of lambing where milk or milk products may be used for human consumption'.
